KICHU LHAKHANG (MONASTRY)

Kichu Lhakhang or the monastery is composed of twin temples which are somewhat set back on the left side of the road that leads to Taktsang (Tiger Nest) and Drukyel Dzong (fortress). It is built on an escarpment and surrounded by the wall; the two temples are visible from the road through a cluster of prayer flags. The first temple at Kichu was built by the Buddhist Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century. The story goes that a giant demoness lay across the whole area of Tibet and the Himalayas and was preventing the spread of Buddhism.
